Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are usually the last teeth to erupt. Even before wisdom teeth start causing you problems, in all likelihood will eventually affect your oral health if not removed. Sometimes there is no room for wisdom teeth to erupt, this can result in teeth becoming impacted. This results in a tooth being partially or completely impacted. When a wisdom tooth is impacted, an onset of symptoms may occur including: pain, swelling, infection, and jaw stiffness. In addition to these issues is teeth over crowding which can damage the teeth adjacent to the molars and surrounding areas. Get the best wisdom tooth extraction Cerritos has to offer with us!
Why You Should Have Wisdom Teeth Removed?
Although wisdom teeth removals are a very common procedure, it is still a relatively significant & serious form of dental surgery. First of all, wisdom teeth are easier to remove when the patient is younger, since their roots have not taken full maturity and form, the surrounding bone is softer, and there is less chance of damaging nearby nerves or other structures. So ideally, we recommend getting this extraction procedure between the ages 18-24, and preferably before the age of 30. Most noteworthy, removal of wisdom teeth at a later age becomes more complicated as the roots have fully developed (which may involve the nerve), and the jawbone is denser. Therefore, early removal will ensure optimal and less complicated healing. For some patients, the wisdom teeth may erupt normally and will have proper alignment in the arch. In such instances, you can retain the the wisdom teeth with proper home care and it does not require extraction.
The Process
Oral Examination
The oral examination will include an x-ray of your mouth for evaluation. Dr. Jesmine will assess the results and project the positioning of your molars as time progresses and if they cause trouble in the future. Typically, patients should undergo initial molar evaluation around their mid-teenage years. Case studies have proven that the earlier this treatment takes place, the better the results are for the patient with less complications.
Removal
To ensure comfort for our patients during oral surgery, we provide sedation dentistry options. This procedure is performed under anesthesia or “laughing gas” to minimize pain and discomfort. Once the wisdom teeth are removed, you can expect some swelling, soreness, and open gauges where your molars were. We recommend that you have a companion post-op to drive and supervise you or have arrangements made prior.
Recovery
Upon discharge we will educate you on how and what you should do, as well as what you should avoid or steer clear from. We will make clear to you on post-operation instructions, prescriptions for pain medication and antibiotics, a syringe to rinse your recovering holes, as well as a scheduled follow-up appointment to check on your progress.
General Guidelines & Tips
- Avoid brushing, flossing, or rinsing for at least the first 24 hours after molar removal.
- Your diet should stick to liquids or soft foods and gradually transition to solids.
- Avoid spicy or hot food because your wounds are still recovering and still sensitive at the time.
- Monitor your bleeding and replace your pieces of gauze when necessary.
